The Laténium Visits the University of Neuchâtel
On Friday 4 October 2024, Ms Virginie Galbarini, Head of Communications at the Laténium Museum, addressed students at the University of Neuchâtel (UNINE). The programme included a presentation of the world-renowned archaeology museum, followed by an overview of the unique challenges of museum communication.
A Case Study in Communication
Virginie Galbarini, Head of Communications at the museum, has implemented several initiatives aimed at introducing the Laténium’s exhibitions to the general public. Located in Hauterive, the Laténium is the largest archaeological museum in Switzerland, with more than 3,000 objects on display.
She shared her expertise with students from the Master’s programme in Journalism and Public Interest Communication (MA3CIG) at UNINE. They explored various aspects of museum communication, including the creation of a visual identity, the development of communication strategies, and the most effective ways to use social media to reach as wide an audience as possible.
What Challenges Does Museum Communication Face Nowadays?
This talk forms part of the MA3CIG’s teaching approach, which aims to raise students’ awareness about different forms of communication. Students were particularly encouraged to reflect on the challenges surrounding cultural and museum communication.
As Virginie Galbarini pointed out, one of the challenges faced by the communications department of an archaeology museum is the lack of interest from the 18–30-year-olds demographic. Reaching this audience requires even greater creativity and the implementation of new strategies. Through this exchange, the Laténium hopes to encourage today’s and tomorrow’s communication specialists to reflect on how Swiss cultural heritage can be promoted to all audiences.
